"Today, slave music is usually grouped in three major categories: Religious, Work, and "Recreational" songs" (“Music in Slave Life”).
Slaves used instruments to render original songs with a limited amount of musical resources. Their masters may have owned instruments, but they were not intended for or accessible to slaves.
"Some masters invited slave musicians to play European music at festivals and gatherings" (“Music in Slave Life”).
Moreover, slaves made use of their bodies and nature because they could not be taken away, and they used this to their advantage. (“Music in Slave Life”)
